How to clean & disinfect kitchen bins
- Start by removing all rubbish and taking the bins out of the kitchen cupboard. I like to clean the bins in the shower or bath as it gives easy access to hot water.
- Give the bin an initial rinse and remove any residue.
- Fill with hot water and detergent and swish around.
- Using the scrubbing brush, give it a thorough clean including all seals, inside the lid, on the base etc.
- Rinse again with hot water and detergent.
- Fill with hot water and add 3-4 drops of tea tree oil.
- Leave to sit for 5-10 minutes.
- Rinse and dry.
- Add 1-2 drops tea tree oil to the bottom of the bin to get rid of any lingering smells.
- Place 1-2 sheets of newspaper in the bottom of the bin before lining with a bag. This helps pick up any liquid that escapes from the bag and prevents gross bin juice.
Once you’ve cleaned and disinfected the bin, regularly wipe it out before replacing the bin bag. The newspaper really helps keep it clean and the tea tree helps keep it smelling fresh. You can also use other oils such as orange or lemon oil or even lavender oil depending on your preference.
Make sure before placing things in the bin you drain away any liquid and try to empty the bin regularly. A smaller bin emptied daily is generally more hygienic and easier to keep clean and smelling fresh than a large bin emptied less frequently.
There you go. A simple guide for how to clean kitchen bins and get rid of any lingering smells.
